Is It Safe to Give Your Phone Number on a Dating App?

Your phone number unlocks far more than a chat. Here's when it's safe to share it with a
match, the red flags to watch for, and how to keep talking privately until you're sure.

Short answernot at first. Keep chatting and calling inside the app until you've had a video call and met in a busy public place. After that, share your number only if you want to. It's your choice, not a test of trust.

Sooner or later, a match will ask: “Can I have your WhatsApp?” It feels like a small step. But in
Sri Lanka, your phone number is linked to far more than one chat app, and once you've shared
it, you can't take it back.
Here's what your number really reveals, the red flags to watch for, and how to keep getting to
know someone without giving it away too early.

What your phone number reveals

A phone number looks harmless. In practice, it's a key to several parts of your life.

Your WhatsApp and Viber profile. Anyone with your number can see your profile photo and
about line, and sometimes when you were last online, unless you change your privacy
settings.

  • Your name. Caller-ID apps can show the name other people saved you under, sometimes
    with your workplace.
  • Your one-time passwords. Banks, mobile wallets and apps send OTP codes to this number.
  • Your NIC. SIM cards in Sri Lanka are registered to the owner's NIC or passport.
  • A line around the app. If things go wrong, blocking someone in a dating app won't stop
them calling or messaging your number.

Why scammers want your number early

People who mean harm move off the app quickly for a reason. Outside the app there's no
report button, no record the app can check and no safety team that can act.
Sri Lanka Police have warned about a surge in WhatsApp account takeovers. Fraudsters trick
people into sharing a verification code, then use the stolen account to ask friends and family
for money. The police advice is simple: never share an OTP or verification code with anyone,
whatever the reason.
Police also list romance scams, run through fake profiles on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp
and Messenger, among the most common online frauds in the country.

6 red flags when a match asks for your number

  1. They ask in the first few messages, before you've had a real conversation.
  2. They say the app is “not working” and push you to WhatsApp or Viber.
  3. They want a video call off the app straight away, especially late at night.
  4. They “accidentally” send you a code and ask you to forward it. Never do: that's how
    accounts get stolen.
  5. They sulk, argue or guilt-trip you when you say “not yet”.
  6. They dodge every call. Voice or video, there's always an excuse.
If you notice one of these, slow down. If you notice two, report the profile.

When is it safe to share your number?

There's no fixed rule, but this order keeps you in control:

  1. Match and chat in the app. Get a feel for how they talk and what they ask.
  2. Talk on a voice call in the app. Hearing someone's voice tells you a lot.
  3. Have a video call, so you know they're the person in the photos.
  4. Meet in a busy public place, during the day if you can. Our [guide to meeting someone
    safely](https://hamuwemu.lk/blog/how-to-stay-safe-when-meeting-someone-online-in-sri-lanka-2026-guide) covers the details.
  5. Then share your number, if you want to. If you both feel good after meeting, swapping
numbers is natural. If you don't, you've lost nothing.

these green flags along the way.

How to share your number safely when you're ready

  • Tighten your WhatsApp privacy. Go to Settings › Privacy and set Profile photo, About and
    Last seen to “My contacts”.
  • Turn on two-step verification. Go to Settings › Account › Two-step verification, so a stolen
code alone can't take over your account.
  • Never forward a code. No genuine match ever needs a code sent to your phone.
  • Keep money out of it. Any request for money, gifts or “fees” ends the conversation.
  • Consider a second number. Some people keep a separate SIM for new contacts.

Already shared your number and regret it?

  1. Stop replying, and block the number on WhatsApp and on your phone.
  2. Report the profile in the dating app, so the safety team can act.
  3. Turn on WhatsApp two-step verification and review your privacy settings.
  4. If you're threatened, blackmailed or asked for money, save screenshots and report it. Call
119 in an emergency, or Sri Lanka CERT on 101 for online scams.
Hithawathi's free helpline, 011 421 6062, can also guide you through the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

Is it rude to say no when a match asks for my number?
No. “I'd like to keep chatting here for now” is a complete answer. Someone genuine will respect
it, and if they don't, you've learned something important.

How long should I wait before giving my number?
Until you've had a video call and met in person. For some people that's a week, for others a
month. Go at the pace that feels right to you.

Can someone find my address from my phone number?
Not directly. But a number can lead to your name, your photos and your social media, which
together can reveal a lot. That's why it's worth waiting.

Is WhatsApp safer than chatting in a dating app?
WhatsApp is encrypted, but it's built for people you already know. A dating app like
Hamuwemu adds verification, reporting and a safety team that can act on what happens in
the chat.

Get to know someone before you give anything away. Hamuwemu lets you chat, call and video-call while your number stays private.
