Matched on a Dating App? Don't Ask for Their Phone Number as Your First Message!

A simple guide to starting meaningful conversations with respect, confidence, and privacy.

Start with a Hello, Not a Number

Matched on a Dating App? Don't Ask for Their Phone Number as Your First Message!

Dating apps are becoming a new way for Sri Lankans to meet people, build friendships, and explore meaningful relationships.
For many people who are new to online dating, one question often comes up immediately after a match: “Can I have your WhatsApp number?” Sometimes, people even send their phone number in the very first message, hoping the other person will contact them outside the app.
Although the intention may be genuine, this approach can create discomfort and make the other person feel pressured.
A match is an opportunity to start a conversation. It is not automatic permission to access someone's private contact details.

1. Remember that a match is the beginning, not the destination

When two people match, it simply means there may be mutual interest in getting to know each other.
It does not mean that both people are immediately comfortable sharing their telephone numbers, WhatsApp accounts, social media profiles, or other personal information.
Give the conversation time to develop naturally. Instead of asking for a number immediately, start by getting to know the person.

2. Start with a friendly, respectful greeting

You do not need a clever pickup line to make a good first impression. A simple, friendly message is often enough.
Example 1 — Simple and polite: “Hi! Nice to match with you. How has your day been?”
Example 2 — Friendly and natural: “Hello! 😊 I thought I'd say hi instead of just looking at your profile. How are you doing?”
Example 3 — Based on their interests: “Hi! I noticed you enjoy travelling. What's one place in Sri Lanka you'd love to visit again?”
Example 4 — For someone looking for a serious relationship: “Hello! I'm glad we matched. I believe good relationships begin with a good conversation. What do you think makes a relationship meaningful?”
These messages show interest without creating pressure.

3. Be curious about the person, not just their contact number

A meaningful conversation begins when both people feel comfortable expressing themselves. Try asking open-ended questions about their interests, hobbies, favourite places, goals, or everyday experiences.

  • Examples:
  • What do you usually enjoy doing during your free time?
  • Are you more interested in travelling or spending a relaxing day at home?
  • What's something that always makes you smile?
  • What qualities do you value most in a partner?
What are you hoping to find through this app?
You do not need to ask all these questions at once. Let the conversation flow naturally, and share something about yourself, too.
A conversation should feel like two people getting to know each other, not an interview.

4. Why asking for a phone number too early can be uncomfortable

Imagine receiving a message from someone you have just matched with: “Hi. Give me your number.” You have never spoken before. You do not know the person yet, and you have not had the opportunity to decide whether you feel comfortable with them.
Even if the person has good intentions, the request may feel sudden or demanding. Some people may worry about unwanted calls, repeated messages, personal information being shared, or losing control over their privacy.
Trust is built through consistent, respectful behaviour—not by exchanging numbers as quickly as possible.

5. Keep your first conversations inside the app

There is nothing wrong with moving a conversation to WhatsApp or another platform when both people genuinely feel ready. However, there is no need to rush.
In-app messaging gives you an opportunity to get to know someone before deciding whether to share more personal information.

  • Do not share your phone number just because someone asks.
  • Never pressure another person to share their contact details.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive personal, financial, or workplace information with someone you have just met.
  • Use the app's blocking and reporting options if someone makes you uncomfortable.
  • Respect a person's decision if they are not ready to move the conversation elsewhere.
If someone does not want to share their number, accept that decision gracefully. They do not owe you an explanation.

6. What if you genuinely want to continue the conversation elsewhere?

Once you have established a comfortable conversation and some trust, you can ask politely.
Example: “We've had some nice conversations, and I'd be happy to keep talking. Would you feel comfortable moving to WhatsApp, or would you prefer to continue chatting here?”
This gives the other person a choice without making them feel pressured. If they prefer to stay on the app, respect their preference.
A person who respects your boundaries is more likely to make you feel comfortable getting to know them.

7. A good conversation is more attractive than a phone number

You do not need to impress someone with expensive gifts, dramatic promises, or overly romantic messages.
Be genuine. Listen carefully. Show interest. Respect boundaries.
A simple “How was your day?” followed by a thoughtful conversation can be more meaningful than asking for someone's number within seconds of matching.
For Sri Lankan users who are new to dating apps, this is an important change in mindset: you are not just trying to get someone's contact details; you are trying to discover whether you connect as people.
Give that connection a chance to develop.
